Just four litres of chemical weed killer was used in Monaghan town this year.
At a presentation yesterday, councillors from the Monaghan MD heard that a number of natural alternatives are being trialled, to remove weeds from the area.
Monaghan County Council had previously passed a motion by Councillor Cathy Bennett to end the use of glyphosate weed killer, but it was reversed last year as a temporary measure.
Other methods, such as a hot foam mixture was used in parts of Dublin Street this year, but gardener Michael Carroll said he didn't consider it successful because of the extra labour and need for more regular treatment.
He confirmed that fewer than four litres of glyphosate herbicide was used this year and they are looking to other local authorities to see how weeds can be managed in a more natural manner.
Cathaoirleach David Maxwell said that although he brought the motion to remove the ban, he was keen to see its use ended when a workable solution is found.
