The GAA pundit said he "in no way intended to demean them by comparing them to Clones".

GAA pundit Joe Brolly says it's the people of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) who deserve an apology, after he compared the Indian city to Clones.

In the aftermath of the recent Ulster Final in St Tiernach's Park, a Joe Brolly article in The Sunday Independent referred to Clones as "Calcutta, Ireland".

His article also made reference to home-owners charging for parking on their property during the Ulster Final.

An Emergency Motion was then passed by Cllr Richard Truell, the out-going Cathaoirleach of the Ballybay-Clones MD, calling on Joe Brolly and The Sunday Independent to apologise for the article.

However, speaking to TheJournal.ie, Brolly said that "upon reflection", he would "like to extend my apologies to the people of Calcutta".

He added that he "in no way intended to demean them by comparing them to Clones".
