Cheltenham winning jockey Nina Carberry is seeking nomination to run as a Fine Gael candidate in the European election later this year.
The 39 year old has declared her intention to run in the Midlands North West constituency in the June election.
Ireland Editor for the Irish Independent, Fionnán Sheahan says it's not the first time an Irish sporting icon has pursued a career in politics: "You have had people crossing over from sport, the most successful case, of course, is the great Jack Lynch who goes on to become Taoiseach. The test case isn't really from sport but, it's from somebody who is high profile and that's Mairead McGuinness 20 years ago. She crossed over from journalism and broadcasting into politics and did so quite successfully winning a seat for Fine Gael kind of against the odds. That's what Nina Carberry has to match."
