It could be 2025 before wastewater discharges in Mullagh and Blacklion are repaired.
The two Cavan villages are among six local areas that have been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as being the main pollutants in nearby waterways.
Virginia and Bailieborough both failed to meet EU wastewater treatment regulations last year, with improvement works there to begin in the next two years.
Works are currently being carried out in Castleblayney and are pushed out until 2023 in Carrickmacross, but David Shannon from the EPA said there’s a concern over the lack of detail on some projects.
