Cavan County Council says the iron lattice work on Claragh Bridge outside Cootehill is to be retained.
Local residents had raised concerns after works on the bridge began in the last number of weeks.
The local authority had planned to carry out extensive refurbishment works on the bridge, which did not include the retention of the ironwork.
The bridge, which dates from 1858, was built as part of the Ashfield Demense.
The Council says works are now underway and the ironwork will be repaired off-site before being reinstalled.
