Irish Water is appealing to farmers, homes and businesses on the Lough Egish Regional Water Supply to check for leaks as the recent cold spell has led to a surge in demand.
Drinking water usage at the plant has increased by 20%, and following freezing temperatures and the subsequent thaw, the network has experienced a greater demand.
In partnership with Monaghan County Council, Irish Water are asking customers in Lough Egish, Latton, Bawn, Rockcorry, Tullycorbet, Ballybay, Castleblayney and Clontibret to check their water supplies and all water connections including outdoor taps and cattle drinking water troughs for leaks.
Peter Gallagher, Operations Lead, says those responsible for unoccupied buildings should also carry out checks, and turn off water where it's not needed.
They are also asking people to conserve water where possible and to only use what they need whilst continuing to adhere to public health advice on hand washing and hygiene.
