A law which would prevent future inquests, trials and civil cases for offences committed during Northern Ireland's Troubles is expected to get its final backing today. The British government's Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill will be approved in the UK House of Lords later.
The Bill also includes a form of limited immunity for some perpetrators of crimes committed during the conflict.
Grainne Teggart, Amnesty Internationals Northern Ireland deputy director, says the Irish government must give a commitment to take the case to the Court of Human Rights if passed.
"It is now critically that when this Bill becomes law that the Irish Government commits to taking an interstate case and taking the UK Government to the European Court of Human Rights," explained Ms We welcome the fact that the Tánaiste has signalled that they have taken legal advice around this case. It's vital that victims see that the Irish Government is standing with them."
