Monaghan County Council's intake of dogs in 2022 more than doubled to 382 compared to the previous year. 58 dogs were reclaimed and 322 were rehomed to members of the public or transferred to Carrick Dog Shelter.
Less than 1% of these were euthanised which compares to a national euthanasia rate of over 4%. The numbers of dogs entering Dog Pounds nationally in 2022 increased by well over 50% to 7,362.
This appears to be due to an increase in dogs being surrendered by their owners and a lack of people interested or willing to rehome dogs. The number of dog licences issued in Monaghan in 2022 was 5,961, a slight increase on 2021 and among the top three local authority rates for licence uptake in the country last year.
There were 268 livestock worrying incidents involving dogs reported to local authorities in 2022, a 23% increase on 2021. The number of reported incidents in Monaghan was 8.
The number of dog attacks on people, where the person or their clothes were damaged, was reported for the first time this year. There were 08 reported attacks nationally, 8 of which occurred in Monaghan.
