Insurers are under no obligation to offer refunds to motorists as a result of covid-19 restrictions.
Ireland's five biggest insurers have issued refunds or rebates to customers, amounting to around €30 per policy, in the form of cash returns and gift cards.
However, Benny Sheridan, the general manager of Sheridan Insurance in Cavan, said it is at the discretion of the insurer to offer such a rebate.
There has been pressure on insurers to refund a small portion of premiums to drivers whose movement has been curtailed due to the covid-19 lockdown.
But Benny Sheridan told The Joe Finnegan Show that the financial solvency of some insurers prohibits them from offering such rebates:
