Co Monaghan's Inniskeen Motte is among five monuments to have been selected for the 2022 "Adopt a Monument Scheme".
The scheme offers communities expertise and mentoring to help them care for their local heritage and over 40 community groups applied to adopt a monument in their locality.
Working in partnership with communities and State bodies, the Adopt a Monument Scheme helps ensure the sustainable future of the adopted monuments.
Chief Executive of the Heritage Council, Virginia Teehan said each of the five sites are "unique and represents important aspects of Ireland's heritage".
It's thought that the Anglo-Norman motte castle in the heart of Inniskeen was constructed on top of an earlier Gaelic settlement.
Inniskeen Enterprise Development Group will now work with the Adopt a Monument team to find out more about the history and archaeology of the site.
