There is increasing concern that the review initiated by the Government will not take a balanced approached to the abortion system in Ireland. According to figures released to Aontu, over 28,500 babies have been aborted in Ireland since the law was changed.
Cavan County Councillor, Sarah O'Reilly, says the review has found that 90% of doctors refuse to carry out abortions. She highlighted how most doctors entered the profession to save lives, not to end them.
The local Aontu representative says evidence given to the Committee on the 8th Amendment stated that 85% of abortions happen for socio economic reasons. In the four years the law has been in place the local councillor says that the number of 28,500 abortions equates into 1,228 classrooms of children.
Cllr O'Reilly says she believes that there is a culture towards abortions in society at present.
