Increases in public transport fares in Cavan will discourage commuters from using the local bus service.
That's the view of Deputy Niamh Smyth who has called the move “counterproductive”, stating that this will be bad news for locals who are doing their best to be climate conscious.
The Cavan-Dublin bus service will see its fare increase by 21% from €9.45 to €11.40, which was announced by the National Transport Authority in recent days. The local TD says price hikes like this one may push people back into their cars, creating further gridlock in towns like Virginia that are 10 years out from a bypass.
Deputy Smyth says she is constantly calling for further improvements to the 109 service and this increase will be a blow to the people that are regular users of the service. She says while the Cavan bus service has gone up by close to €2, fares has reduced closer to the city.
