There's been an increase in the number of theft related offences in the Northern Sound region since last year
The figures are contained in the latest crime statistics report from the Central Statistics Office.
In quarter one of this year, 221 incidents of theft were reported in the Cavan and Monaghan Garda Division. 121 instances of theft from a shop, 85 for handling stolen property, and 13 of theft of vehicles were recorded this year. 66 cases of burglary were also registered. Compared with the same time last year, the number of theft related offences increased in the region, where 191 thefts were reported. Meanwhile the number of people caught driving under the influence of alcohol has remained relatively unchanged. In quarter one of this year, 58 people were caught driving whilst over the legal limit for alcohol, and 25 for driving under the influence of drugs. This compares with 57 last year, however the figure for drug driving has over doubled from 11.
