Temperatures plunged to as low as minus 3 degrees Celsius overnight across the region. A Met Eireann cold weather alert is in effect until midday.
A status yellow warning applies across the country. Alan O'Reilly, from Carlow Weather, says conditions are treacherous in places.
"There are very cold temperatures this morning with widespread frost and icy patches. There is also patches of freezing fog that is making for some locally treacherous conditions.
"There are also wintery showers particularly in the North and North West," he added.
