A young Cavan woman living in Valencia says she couldn't sit back and do nothing after major flooding ravaged the city.
22 year old Leigha Plunkett from Templeport is currently working as an English Language Assistant in Valencia. Once the flooding hit, she began helping with clean up efforts, describing the scenes as almost apocalyptic. The Cavan native is a graduate in Spanish and Drama from Trinity College and is currently studying a Masters in human rights.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Leigha says the local Irish community in Valencia have all banded together to try and raise much needed funds for the area
"I was sitting up in my house thinking I can't just sit here and do nothing. Where my school was, it's 40 minutes outside the city and they were affected also. I said we all had to do something and the Irish community here, we play football, and they've raised €4,000 for supplies and then me and my friends created a new donation link which has raised just over €2,000 since last night. It's not like I'm helping just to be kind, it's a matter of life or death so that people can survive and get their lives back together".
