Hundreds lined the streets of Clones last night, as the community comes to terms with the death of two local teenagers. 17-year-old Kiea McCann and 16-year-old Dlava Mohamed died when the car they were traveling in crashed on the N54 between Clones and Smithboro, while they were on their way to the debs.
Investigations into the crash are now being headed by a senior investigating Garda. The driver of the car - a man in his 60s - remains in a critical condition, an 18-year-old girl is in a critical but stable condition, while an 18-year-old boy is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Sinn Féin Councillor Pat Treanor says the community came together to mourn the loss of Kiea and Dlava last night. "We spent yesterday trying to comes to terms with what happened. Last night the remains of Kiea McCann came back to the town.
"Hundreds lined the streets; there was an outpouring of grief; and I suppose for the first time people were getting together and being able to talk about it. It was an expression of love for the two girls," he added.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Patrick O'Connell from Monaghan Garda Station says Gardai will provide the necessary support for those in community affected by the tragedy. "This tragedy continues to be extremely traumatic for our local community.
"Particularly in the Clones and Monaghan area and we will continue to work closely with the teaching and management staff at Largy College to support the students and staff who have been affected by this terrible tragedy," he added.
