A local representative has added his opinion to how the Apple tax windfall should be spent. Senator Robbie Gallagher said "discussions are ongoing" at government level on how to spend the large sum in back-tax Apple was ordered to pay Ireland.
The sum was €13bn but, is now at about €14 billion with interest. Robbie Gallagher towed the government political line and that of his party when he said the money should be spent on road, housing, water and energy infrastructure to protect the economy and full employment in the long run:
"No decisions have been made yet," Senator Gallagher told the Joe Finnegan Show recently, "We're very fortunate here in that we've an economy going extremely well so, thankfully anybody who wants a job in this country can get one but, when you're industry is telling you out there that you have issues with housing, in relation to energy supply then, you need to listen to those so, I think resources should be targeted in those key areas to make sure that the functioning economy that we're enjoying at the moment continues to stay with us,"
