A member of a Monaghan based retirement club believes charging extra for single occupancy in hotels is completely unfair.
A single supplement is an additional sum of money that a hotel charges for one person to stay in a room meant for two or more people.
Jane Flynn from U3A in Monaghan, an organisation supporting retired people, says the difference between single occupancy and person sharing is sometimes staggering. The group are travelling to Tralee and Sligo this year, where the difference between single and sharing is between €125 and €175. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Jane says not everyone has a choice in being on their own and she called for the practice to be abolished.
"It's not always people's choice to be on their own. They have just found themselves in that position. I know you have to charge a certain amount extra, yes, but I think sometimes is exorbitant. I think maybe there should be some form of help, I don't know how they would do it, but for people who are single, widowed, or on their own, it's hard enough for some of those people to get up and go places as it is".
