Today's turning of the sod at the Shannon Pot Discovery Centre has been described as a "historic" moment for West Cavan. The development at Cavan Burren Park will upgrade the visitors centre there, provide new walks including a raised walk to allow visitor enjoy the spectacular views of Cuilcagh, over Garvagh Lough and towards Lough Allen. Cavan County Council and Fáilte Ireland have contributed funding of just over €10m for the project.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr John Paul Feeley described today as a "historic day" for West Cavan and the wider region. "This purpose built visitor centre will be opened all year round and will provide people with a really fantastic opportunity to explore West Cavan, the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark and the wider region."
Grainne O Connor who is manager of the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark outlined the "hard work" that was needed to get the project to this point. "This project has been ongoing for a number of years now and it has taken a huge amount of work and a huge amount of partnership and collaboration between a lot of people and essentially that is what the Geopark is. The Shannon Pot Discovery Centre is the heart of the Geopark. It's a collaboration between two counties, two councils , cross border but both with the common goal of sustainable development for local communities."
