Cavan's Leona Maguire is yet again capturing the attention of golf fans right across the world through her efforts at this year's prestigious Solheim Cup. The Solheim Cup event between Europe and the USA is currently underway in Spain.
Peter Duignan is the Golf Professional at Longford and Cavan Golf Clubs. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan show, the professional golfer described Ballyconnell's Leona Maguire as someone who is "incredibly strong-minded" and a "wonderful golfer."
While Mr Duignan believes that Cavan's Leona Maguire is "up there" as one of the best golfers in the world, he added that for many golf fans across the globe, Leona is the "shining star" of this year's European team with great things expected from the Ballyconnell native.
"If you look at the tournaments that she is playing in, she's a money making machine," he explained. "She's in the top 15 or top 10 of every single tournament she plays in. Leona had a very good chance earlier of winning a major, but unfortunately that didn't work out for her.
He continued; "She's up there with the best golfers in the world and she's holding her own. It's great to see and just really hope that Leona has a great Solheim Cup. Leona's progression as a professional golfer is just brilliant for Irish ladies golf, which has just been crying out for someone like Leona for years.”
