After 21 years of being in public life representing people, she is calling it a day.

Local Minister Heather Humphreys has been described as formidable force to be reckoned with.

The Cavan/Monaghan TD has served in various cabinet positions since 2014. Since 2020 the Fine Gael TD has held the roles of Minister for Rural and Community Affairs and also the Minister for Social Protection.

The Monaghan woman was also the deputy leader up of Fine Gael up until yesterday and has been a TD in the constituency since 2011. The weekends news has come as a shock to many as she was almost sure to be re elected to the Dail to represent the people of the region.

Senator Robbie Gallagher says Heather Humphreys can be very proud of the legacy that she will leave in Cavan and Monaghan.

Cllr David Maxwell said Heather is one of a kind.

After 21 years of being in public life representing people she said that Politicians are human too; and we give all we can for as long as we can but time catches up on us all. As she gets older, her health and energy levels are not what they once were and she knows going forward that she would not be able to give the job the time and commitment it deserves.

Cllr Richard Truell says the Fine Gael Minister says she brings a presence with her wherever she goes.

While Deputy Niamh Smyth said there is one thing that's for sure is that Heather Humphreys has done so much for the betterment of the people in this region.

Cllr Sean Gilliland said there has always been a personal side to Heather adding that she has been always like a mother to all the councillors in the area.

Cllr Aidan Campbell said the news of Heather Humphreys quitting politics was being discussed in New York and he said she will be a huge loss to Monaghan.

Cllr Pauric Clerkin said she has worked day and night for the people of this region and it was now time for her to spend more time with her family.

Cllr Trevor Smith said no job was too big or too small for her.

Cllr TP O'Reilly said Heather and her family have a lot to be proud of due to her work through the years.

Finally, Senator Joe O'Reilly said he was in school at the same time as Heather and she has been a true professional and a good friend.

 

With the date of the election set to be announced there is one thing that's for sure now after this weekend, the name Heather Humphreys will not be on the ballot papers whenever the General Election will be held.
