The Health Minister says priests who plan to go ahead with confirmation and first communion ceremonies are putting people's lives at risks.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Stephen Donnelly's urged Catholic bishops not to go against public health advice.

The Bishop of Elphin is one bishop that has pledged to offer communion masses to families in his Diocese, despite public health advice.

Baptisms will be allowed from next Thursday once protective measures are put in place with health experts urging the public not to to gather in unsafe numbers afterwards.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show on Friday last, Bishop Kevin Doran said that government restrictions already allow 50 people to attend mass.

According to Bishop Doran, with the current church limits, the sacraments should be offered to children and families locally who wish to take part.

Currently, the ceremonies aren't permitted under Covid-19 guidelines despite the numbers allowed at weddings increasing from 50 to 100 from Thursday.
