A Monaghan Councillor has called on the Health Minister to immediately prioritise orthopaedic interventions for children with spinal issues like Spina Bifida.
Ireland has one of the highest incidences of Spina Bifida in the world, and Seamus Coyle says there are around 900 children with these types of disabilities waiting more than 18 months for their first hospital appointment.
Councillor Coyle warns that such waiting times can cause children to lose their ability to walk and causes severe trauma to the children and their families.
