Aldi has been given the green light for plans to open a new large-scale store in Monaghan town.
The German outlet lodged plans back in April for the construction of an 1,800sq m single storey food store at the town's Macartan Road junction and the Glen Road.
The approved plans form part of the retail firm's continued expansion nationwide and follows planning approval for a €6.5m store in Cootehill earlier this year.
Monaghan County Council confirmed to Northern Sound this evening that the green light has been given. This isn't the first time the international grocery store have applied to Monaghan County Council for a presence in Monaghan Town. Aldi has been trying to establish an outlet in the county town for a number of years at the site known as McNally's car park.
Flood remediation and flood relief works outside the Aldi site boundary led to those plans being unsuccessful. Aldi say they remained committed to constructing and opening a new store in Monaghan to bring value to the local community as soon as possible. 20 full time jobs will be created by the store opening in the town, County planners gave the go-ahead with a date of the 6th of May 2027 that works must be completed on the new store.
