Government is to oppose a local Senator's horticultural peat harvesting bill.
Last week, Senators Robbie Gallagher and Regina Doherty introduced the Horticultural Peat (Temporary Measures) Bill, in response to the sector being forced to import peat from abroad.
The aim of it was to allow some peat to be harvested for the horticultural sector, until a sustainable alternative can be identified.
Debating the Bill this week, Senator Gallagher said it was brought to the floor on the back of concerns for the local mushroom sector.
Minister of State Malcolm Noonan said that although he appreciated the contributions from all members, the Attorney General had identified "serious legal issues" in the bill.
He said the Government will await a report into the sector before considering the next step.
