Planning permission for a new Tesco store and filling station in Cavan Town has been upheld by An Bórd Pleanála.
The new development will also include a drive-thru café Tesco Ireland Limited submitted a planning application earlier this year to construct a Tesco supermarket, a four pump filling station, and a drive-thru café.
A car wash and jet wash area are also included as well as signage. The site is located in the townland of Townparks, bounded to the north by St Clare's National School and to the west by the existing surface car park of the current Tesco Store. Permission for the development was granted by Cavan County Council however the decision was appealed to the Higher Planning Authority. The appeal, submitted on behalf of the Friends of Killymooney Lough cited a number of concerns. Issues raised included increased traffic in the area due to the car borne custom associated with the development, the visual impact of the structure particularly on the nearby lake, and the proximity of the station to St Clare's National School. In it's response to the appeal, Tesco cited precedence for the development in an area like the proposed site, traffic management reports had been completed, and Visual Assessment report showed that the structure would not have an adverse impact on the surrounding area. An Bórd Pleanála agreed, and upheld the council's decision to grant permission, stating that the new store and café would be acceptable in terms of accessibility, wouldn't have an unacceptable impact on water quality, and wouldn't injure the visual or residential amenities in the area
