People in the Northern Sound region are being urged to practice caution after a case of rental fraud in Monaghan.
The injured party responded to an advertisement on a fake website via email, and then by text.
A large deposit was then electronically transferred, after which contact with the fraudster ceased.
Gardaí are reminding people to ensure that they are dealing with a bona fide rental agency, and if possible, advise that you meet the prospective landlord at the accommodation to be rented.
Gardaí say you should never accept an excuse, such as the landlord being out of the country, as a reason why they cannot show you the property.
People are also being urged to pay a deposit by cheque or bank draft where possible.
