Gardaí in Emyvale seized an electric bike from a 14-year-old at the weekend. When officers stopped the teenager driving the bike on a main road, they found the cyclist had no licence or insurance on the motorised vehicle.
From May this year, new rules on the use of e-bikes were introduced including a rule that only those aged 16 or over are allowed to drive e-scooters. Powerful e-mopeds that can go faster than fast cyclists now need vehicle registration and, in some cases, to be licensed and insured. The child cyclist in Emyvale has been referred to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme and had their bike seized.
