Gardaí in the Cavan Monaghan Division have issued advice to homeowners this week on how to prevent oil thefts at their properties.
Gardaí say there is a noted increase in such thefts because of the rising cost of fuel.
Garda Tracey Donaghy said homeowners are advised to exercise caution at all times.
She said the installation of alarms will help to deter burglars.
The local Garda also highlighted how the restriction of access to oil tanks can prove helpful and keeping gates closed and locked can boost security at home.
"We have recently seen a sharp increase in the price of petrol, diesel and heating oil. Unfortunately this has led to an increase in cases of fuel theft. Some tips to prevent the theft of fuel include installing alarms, and anti-siphoning devices, effective security lighting and CCTV can also help to disrupt fuel thieves."
