Gardaí are investigating the cause of a fire at a building in County Longford that had been set aside to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. The incident happened at the old convent in Lanesboro last night. Gardaí have launched an investigation into the fire, which was swiftly brought under control, at Lanesboro’s former Convent building late last night.
The fires happened at the front and back doors of the old convent in at around 9.30pm. It’s understood that there was little or no damage caused to the building by the fire. The Department of Integration have confirmed that the building had been offered as accommodation for up to 85 Ukrainian refugees and that the property had currently been undergoing refurbishment. There has been a spate of fires at accommodation earmarked for asylum seekers and refugees in recent months.
