Members of the pubic across Cavan are advised to be "mindful" of the harm caused by online fraudsters. Speaking at Cavan's recent Joint Policing Committee, Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Mick Duffy warned members of the public to "never click" on a link that is sent via an email or text message and to never give away personal information or bank details.
According to Sergeant Duffy, Gardai at a local have witnessed a number of incidents in recent months, particularly in relation to fake Covid vaccination scams and messages over unpaid road toll charges.
Sergeant Duff revealed that when money is taken from an account, it extremely difficult for professionals in the fraud unit to retrieve it again. As a result, he has urged the public to always report any incident of fraud to your local Garda Station if your think you are a victim of fraud. He added that it is important to take a screenshot of suspicious messages to keep as a record, and to block the sender immediately.
