Convicted garda killer Pearse McAuley died of a suspected heart attack at his home in Co Tyrone, at the age of 59.
It comes two years after he was released from prison over the brutal attack on his ex-wife Pauline Tully, a Sinn Fein TD for Cavan-Monaghan. McAuley was part of the IRA gang that shot dead Detective Garda Jerry McCabe in Limerick in 1996.
He had returned to Strabane following being released from prison, where he was originally from. The former Provisional IRA member was found dead yesterday afternoon in Strabane at the age of 59.
Allison Morris, the crime correspondent for the Belfast Telegraph, has information on his cause of death.
