Legislation surrounding gambling will streamline, strengthen and modernise gambling regulation according to one local senator. Senator Robbie Gallagher has welcomed the passing of the Gambling Regulation Bill through both Houses of the Oireachtas, saying that it introduces a modern and robust licencing and regulatory framework for both in-person and online gambling in Ireland for the first time.
The Bill is a landmark achievement by Minister of State James Browne on fundamentally transforming gambling in Ireland, putting the safety and well-being of citizens first. Senator Gallagher said: "For far too long, our gambling laws have not been fit for purpose, failing to take account of the fact people have instant access to casinos in their pockets with their smartphones.
He said the gambling industry has continued to evolve, particularly in terms of ads and sponsorships, which disproportionally effect vulnerable groups, especially children and those at risk. The Monaghan Senator added that the passing of this legislation marks a significant public health victory.
