A Monaghan councillor has praised development works which have taken place in recent days at the new marina in Clones. Water was pumped in for the first time to the canal with works due to be finished by end of May on this section. The project, which is currently in phase two and expected to reach completion in 2028, will receive €120 million in capital funding and create 100 indirect jobs as part of the project.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Pat Treanor said this recent development is "great" for the community of Clones and further afield. He added that the development of the Ulster Canal is something that people have waited on and campaigned for over many years. "It's just fantastic," explained Cllr Treanor. "We have waited and campaigned for many many years to see the development of the Ulster Canal. Just to see this phase involving the marina is a great milestone to reach in the overall project of reopening the canal."
