There are fresh calls for the upgrade of the N2 following the announcement yesterday by the government that will see €600 million being spent on the A5.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced a €1 billion package yesterday afternoon which included €600 million to upgrade the A5 from Derry to Letterkenny, which is expected to begin later this year. Cllr Paudge Connolly said that the N2 was the main artery from Dublin to Northern Ireland and its an artery that has been left neglected to this day.
The independent councillor welcomed the funding announced yesterday for the A5 but said that he hoped it wasn't a false dawn like what has been encountered over a long number of years in relation to the N2. The Monaghan councillor said the fact is the government haven't been stepping up to the mark when it comes to the N2. He said more needed to be done to make our roads safer especially in the wake of statistics released by the Roads Safety Authority which revealed how seven people lost their lives on Monaghan roads last year.
Cllr Connolly said every year that the N2/A5 road isn't upgraded, more lives will be lost.
