Funeral takes place of Cootehill man Gene McDonald

The Cootehill native died as a result of a fatal collision last Sunday afternoon.

The funeral mass is currently taking place of Cootehill native Gene McDonald. The 35-year-old lost his life along with his friend, 46-year-old Daire Maguire from Lisnaskea in Co Fermanagh after their car hit a wall during the sixth stage of the Sligo Rally.

The tragedy occurred at around 3pm last Sunday afternoon. Mr McDonald ran a busy garage for over 10 years in Carrickmacross and was a very popular mechanic in the area.

His funeral mass is currently taking place at St Mary's Middle Chapel this afternoon, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Meanwhile, Gene's co-driver Daire Maguire, was laid to rest yesterday morning in Newtownbutler.
