Ronan Wilson, the nine-year-old Co. Tyrone boy who died following a hit-and-run incident in Bundoran at the weekend, is to be laid to rest today.
At around 9:20pm on Saturday night Ronan was struck by a car on Atlantic Way in Bundoran. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car didn’t stop at the scene but the following day Gardaí arrested Serge Kelly (23) at his home in Mullaghmore, Co.Sligo and he was later charged in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.
Kelly appeared in court on Monday accused of failing to stop following the incident, not rendering aid and not contacting Gardaí.
During that court hearing, Gardaí said when Kelly was cautioned he replied: “I should’ve stopped but I didn’t”.
Ronan’s remains have been reposing at his family home in Kildress, near Cookstown, Co. Tyrone until his requiem mass at 12 noon in St. Mary’s Church, Dunamore today.
Ronan, a keen gaelic footballer, leaves behind his parents, Emma and Dean Wilson, brother Calum and sister Amy. He is also grieved by his grandparents Paul and Imelda McAuley of Ballycastle and has been described as the ‘cherished’; grandson of Pat and the late Collette Wilson.
Shortly after the tragedy, Ronan’s father, Dean, took to Facebook describing him as ‘the best son anyone could ask for’.
