Funding has been secured for road improvement works on the crossroads at Lough Egish. The announcement was made at this month's meeting of Monaghan County Council.
Fine Gael's Sean Gilliland has spearheaded the campaign for road safety improvements on the R180 Lough Egish road from Castleblayney to the county boundary bridge over the last five years.
While previous repair works have left parts of the road in a "reasonable condition," Cllr Gilliland said he was "delighted" to confirm that funding has been secured for specific works to be carried out on the crossroads at Lough Egish.
He added that the upgrade will enhance the overall safety of both pedestrians and motorists. "Works from Lough Egish crossroads to the county bridge are of huge significance and bear a significant cost," explained Cllr Gilliland. "I would of liked in the ideal scenario to get started and finished all in the one go but funding is not going to allow us to do that. Despite this, engineering staff at Monaghan County Council has been meeting with various roads funding programmes and basically we are going to be able to do it in phases and highlight the worst and most dangerous phases first."
