A Monaghan councillor has expressed frustration that the Monaghan to Smithborough element of the Ulster Canal was not included in a 63.5 million euro allocation for greenways funding.
The government announced yesterday that the funding would be made available for a range of greenways across the country, but the Ulster Canal project did not benefit.
Councillor David Maxwell passed a motion at a Monaghan County Council meeting calling on Oireachtas members to explain why this project wasn't included in the funding.
Concern was recently expressed that the Ulster Canal Greenway from Monaghan town to Smithborough could be postponed because of a funding shortfall.
Monaghan County Council recently asked for further funding to complete the project and Councillor Maxwell says it's disappointing this extra funding wasn't forthcoming in the latest greenways allocation:
