Tributes are being paid to adopted Scotstown woman, community worker, health activist, poultry and dairy farmer, Scór competitor and committed GAA clubwoman, Bernie Sherry. The mother-of-two and wife of Pauric, passed away on Tuesday after a considerable and public battle with cancer, which, those who knew her well, say she faced in the same way she approached all the other roles she undertook in life.
Bernie was a regular contributor to Northern Sound as she aimed, even in her own ill-health, to serve others by spreading her message of wellbeing and cancer awareness. Friends of the 54-year-old have found it difficult to adequately pay tribute to the woman who carried out health screening for juveniles at Scotstown GAA, made national news with the "Make your Céilí" scheme she started during lockdowns to address loneliness amongst her neighbours, and who livestreamed mass across the parish also during the pandemic.
High-energy, driven, easy-going, open and genuine are just some of the ways in which friends remember her inimitable personality. She will also be remembered as great craic. Just last Friday, Bernie received bad news on her cancer journey but immediately set about planning a Christmas party, complete with Santa, for all her friends and neighbours. She is reported to have been the last to go to bed. Originally from Truagh, her friends and neighbours from Scotstown say Bernie will be sorely missed because she was many things to so many people:
