One out of the four fire appliances that attended a blaze at an industrial premises in Clones today has been stood down. Chief Fire Officer for County Monaghan, Dermot Brannigan, told Northern Sound the blaze has been brought under control and firefighters are now in what is called the "making up" or cleaning up stage of their operation.
In all, four appliances attended the scene on McCurtain Street in the town. The Clones fire crew were assisted by two appliances from Monaghan Town and one from Ballybay. An hydraulic platform and water tanker were deployed and firefighters were equipped with breathing apparatus. The latest update is that the Ballybay crew has been stood down.
Officer Brannigan said the call came in at 12:55 this afternoon that a fire had broken out at the fibreglass business to the rear of a tyre business in Clones. Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while smoke and fumes billowed from the site and people were asked to avoid the area if possible. Dermot Brannigan described the damage to both businesses as "extensive".
