A former Monaghan TD has welcomed the conversation being had about the enforcement of driving offences.
It comes after Agriculture Minister Barry Cowen and Sinn Fein TD Pat Buckley were banned from driving in the past couple of years for drink-driving. Both were on learner permits at the time.
Sinn Fein's Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said the incidents have helped focus attention onto the importance of obeying the rules of the road.
Speaking on The Joe Finnegan Show, he said said the focus is no longer just on the actions of those in public office.
