A former Monaghan councillor has condemned the booing of 'God Save the King' at the Aviva Stadium over the weekend.
The Republic of Ireland faced England in their opening game of the UEFA Nations League on Saturday. Controversy and debate erupted after Irish fans loudly booed the English national anthem before the game. Former Carrickmacross councillor, Pauric McNally says he was disappointed with the amount of young fans participating in it.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, he says supporters who took part in the booing let themselves and the nation down.
"I've been to France, Italy, all over Europe following the Irish team and I'm disappointed because we ourselves pride ourselves of being great supporters and we have been complimented. We won an award from FIFA before for the behaviour of our fans. Coming from that backdrop, I think this is most disappointing. I would like to think we'll learn from this and I hope to be in the crowd in November when we have the return leg in Wembley. It'll be interesting to see how we're received".
