A former Irish soldier has died while fighting in Ukraine. He was a member of a special forces unit there, involved in complex missions.
Bella Finn reports: "It's reported a former Army Ranger Wing for the Irish Defence Forces has been killed in action fighting in the war in Ukraine. The man aged in his 20's had retired from the Defence Forces and was from Newbridge in Co. Kildare. It does not appear that the man had any ties to Ukraine before joining the efforts to fight Russia in 2022.
"However, he had to return home in October that year as he was injured in an explosion and lost an eye as a result of his injuries. He returned to help earlier this year following his recovery and died last Thursday while retreating from an area of Ukraine which had come under attack from Russian forces. The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is providing consular assistance."
