Food supplies on the shelves across Cavan town supermarkets are running low this afternoon due to an IFA protest outside Aldi and Lidl stores. Local IFA members began the protest last Wednesday and are demanding a price increase for their produce.
They are blocking lorries arriving at the stores from making deliveries and this is putting additional pressure on supplies in other supermarkets in the town. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, IFA's regional chairman, Frank Brady, said protesting farmers have the support of the public.
He added that while 'progress' is being made with Aldi and Lidl management, local food producers are not budging until the price increase is set in stone. "There is a lot of anger down in the southern part of the country and farmers down there are just waiting for the go ahead from us," he continued.
"It's not fair that all of this is happening just here. But the answer to all of this lies in Aldi's pocket."
