The Society of St Vincent de Paul says it's dealing with people on a regular basis in the region that are struggling to heat their homes. Madeline Uí Mhealóid who is the Cavan rep for SVP says even with the number of once off measures announced in Budget 2025. people are still struggling to pay their energy bills or even buy a bag of coal.
The charity says the rising costs of fuel and food mean people are juggling their weekly bills to try and make ends meet. Speaking to Northern Sound on Budget day last week, she says heating homes locally is still a major struggle for a high number of people. She says even with the once off measures that were announced in Budget 2025 will be short lived when it comes to the winter period.
