Five Monaghan students have won top prizes in this year's 69th Texaco Children's Art Competition.
In the 7-8 years age category, third prize was won by Mary Kate Conlon (age 7), from Scoil Naoimh Éanna, Carrickmacross, for her artwork entitled 'The Runner'.
Her work was described by Final Adjudicator, Professor Gary Granville as "one that captures all the movement and strain of a runner in flight, though interesting sketching of background and context."
In addition, four Monaghan winners each won Special Merit Awards for artworks that Professor Granville said 'were imaginative and displayed high levels of skill and creativity'. They were Alan Joju (16) and Hermosa McInver (17), both from Patrician High School, Carrickmacross, and Ashley Maj (6) and Ailbhe Birdy (6), both from Scoil Naoimh Éanna, Carrickmacross.
The Texaco Children's Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longest-running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the very first Competition held in 1955. This year, as has been the case throughout its life, it has been a platform on which young artists from Monaghan and counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended.
