An open night is planned for Cornafean tonight in a bid to form a community first responders group. The initiative is open to volunteers who are interested in becoming a first responder in the areas of Arva, Cornafean, Crossdoney , Drumcor, Kilmore and Killeshandra. The meeting will take place at Cornafean GFC at 7.30pm this evening. Thanasie Kaldanis is hoping that from tonight's meeting, a group can be formed similar to one which was recently developed in Corlough.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Thanasie highlighted that one in five calls received by the National Ambulance Service is of a cardiac nature and that's basically the role of a community first responder. He has encouraged as many local people as possible to attend tonight's meeting, adding that it is an "opportunity" for members of the public to "give back" to their local community in a positive way that could potentially save a life.
