Chief Fire Officer, Dermot Brannigan believes that routine fire safety checks should be carried out, particularly at night.

A number of initiatives are taking place across Co Monaghan to mark 'Fire Safety Week.' The theme of this year's campaign is - We didn't start the fire, but what did? Monaghan's Chief Fire Officer, Dermot Brannigan told Northern Sound that the aim of this week is to educate people around the potential risks of what could start a fire within the home.

With longer evenings and winter nights fast approaching, Dermot said it's important for people to ensure that fire guards are always in place and smoke alarms are routinely checked. To coincide with Fire Safety Week members of Monaghan Fire Service will be giving out free smoke alarms to the most vulnerable of society between 10am and 2pm tomorrow.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Dermot said this will also be an opportunity for people to come along and ask local firefighters about any questions or concerns that they may have regarding their smoke alarms. The locations are - Castleblayney (Glencarn Shopping Centre) Ballybay (Mace) Carrickmacross (O'Gorman's Supervalu) Clones (Supervalu) Monaghan Town (Church Square).
