Minister Heather Humphreys has become the latest Fine Gael TD to announce she won’t be contesting the general election. The Cavan Monaghan TD and Deputy Leader of the party shocked colleagues with the news over the weekend.
Humphreys’ departure from politics marks the eighteenth Fine Gael TD out of the 35 currently in the Dáil to have announced they would not be contesting the upcoming general election.
Speaking to Virgin media news yesterday, Taoiseach Simon Harris said he believes Heather Humphreys seat can be retained and they will challenge for a second one too: "I'm very confident that we'll hold the seat in Cavan -Monaghan," he said, "In fact, we're going to compete for two seats in Cavan - Monaghan. We'd a very good local elections there, although we take nothing for granted but, already today I'm hearing from people who'd like to be Heather Humphreys' replacement on the Fine Gael ticket so, we'll work through that."
